He was given the number J105189, and was a milk seller before joining. Over the next two years he trained on the COLOSSUSUS, The training ship IMPREGNABLE ( their were several ships called Impregnable, and each changed their name to Impregnable while being used as a training ship.) COURAGEOUS (a battlecruiser) and KING GEORGE V. As a boy his description was 5 foot 5 inches, 35 1/2 inch chest, dark brown hair, grey eyes and fresh complexion with mole on right side of face. He passed his education test on the 1st July 1924. While serving on the KING GEORGE V (King George V herself was decommissioned in 1919, used as a training ship between 1923-26 and scrapped in 1926). He passed his training and came of age to become an able seaman on his 18th birthday on the 10th September 1923, when he signed up for 12 years. He stayed on the KING GEORGE V. He then served time on the VICTORY 1 then COLUMBINE (DAINTY) and bacck to the VICTORY 1 . As a 18 year old he is described as 5 foot 7 inches, 37 1/2 inch chest, dark brown hair, grey eyes and fresh complexion. His conduct throughout his career was of very good character and satisfactory ability.
