      The Gayford Family

We know that there was a James Gayford. He was born c1776 and he died at Attleborough on 1st December 1849 (this is wrong it should be 1848). James married his first wife, Elizabeth Kemp, at St Margaret's church, Kings Lynn on 30th October 1806. Their first child, William, was baptised at Larling on 27th December 1807 and they had two other children, James and Mary, who were baptised in 1809 and 1812 respectively. Elizabeth died at Attleborough in 1812.

On 13th October 1813 James married a widow, Elizabeth Church, formerly Rush, who was born at Banham and was a step cousin of James Bloomfield Rush. James Bloomfield Rush's step-father, John Rush, left Elizabeth Church ?200 in his will. James and Elizabeth Church had four children: Elizabeth born 1814, ANNE born 1816, George born 1819 and Emily born 1822.

There were members of the Gayford family living at Wretham, Croxton, Mundford, Banham, Hargham, Hockham, Raynham, Shipdham, Euston, Thetford, Ketteringham and Breckles. It is believed that our James Gayford of Breckles is the brother to John Gayford of Croxton (1776-1853). We believe this because John Gayford married Mary Kitton and Samuel Kitton, probably a relation to Mary, was one of the witnesses at the marriage of James Gayford and Elizabeth Church.

(After looking into this I believe the Samuel Kitton who was a witness at James wedding could of been Mary Kitton's father. Samuel's will indicates a strong link with the Gayford family that Mary married into. Although I would really like to believe that John and James are brother's I am reluctant to put them together on the same tree untill I can find more proof ie:- baptism records for John and James, Tracy Barrall)
